Leather That Grows with Time — “KAKI” by Tochigi Leather, Inspired by Japanese Aesthetics

Founded in 1937, Tochigi Leather is a renowned tannery based in Tochigi Prefecture and the only tannery in Japan that remains fully committed to the traditional method of full vegetable tanning.
Using only natural vegetable tannins derived from plants such as mimosa, each leather hide is slowly and carefully tanned over time without the use of harmful chemicals. The result is an environmentally conscious material that is almost entirely biodegradable.
What makes this leather truly special is the way it evolves.
The rich aging process created by natural oils and tannins gives the leather a deep character and patina that only genuine leather can achieve. Crafted with patience and respect for nature, Tochigi Leather embodies the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship.
Rooted in Mashiko, Tochigi — the birthplace of our brand — starnet has long embraced natural materials, handcrafted work, regional culture, and a sustainable way of living.
This shared philosophy and aesthetic resonated deeply with Tochigi Leather, leading to the creation of this season’s special limited-edition model.
KAKI
A soft yet deeply expressive color made possible only through Tochigi Leather’s natural vegetable-tanned leather.
More than simply “orange brown,” the shade carries a subtle sense of Japanese warmth and familiarity — inspiring us to name it “KAKI,” after the persimmon fruit.
With sunlight, time, and everyday wear, the leather gradually develops its own unique expression.
A color that grows together with its wearer — that is KAKI.
